Tamalyn Dallal
- Why do Tamalyn Dallal’s classes appeal to beginner bellydance students?
Tamalyn has dedicated her life training dancers in the smallest details of this art form. This is apparent in her students like Bozenka and Amar Gamal. TribalCon’s theme this year is Foundations and I wanted the best detail oriented teacher for you! - How can Tamalyn’s classes benefit a well-seasoned bellydance student?
Again her detail oriented instruction with volumes of information on history, culture, country of origin is a treasure for any dancer. She has fully immersed herself in folk dances, Raks Sharki, Romani, Persian, etc….as well as being famous for her fantasy and fusion. - Tamalyn Dallal ventures around the world doing speaking engagements, teaching Middle Eastern dance workshops and performing.
In 2011, she has taught and spoke in Mexico, the Pacific Northwest, Argentina, NYC and Korea. Most recently, at the end of June, she sponsored a 6 day trip to Egypt’s Siwa Oasis with Denise Marino, then taught at the Ahlan Wasahlan Festival in Cairo. From there Tamalyn went to Zanzibar to teach sold out workshops with Bozenka. The rest of her year includes Taiwan, Shanghai, Indonesia and Perú.
Now she is coming to us! More about Tamalyn:
- Having started her study of Middle Eastern dance in 1976, Tamalyn Dallal has enjoyed a prolific career. She has taught and performed in 38 countries. In 1990, she founded the non profit arts organization “Mid Eastern Dance Exchange” in Miami Beach, through which she mentored thousands of dancers around the world. Through sixteen years of directing the organization, Ms. Dallal produced numerous stage productions and dance festivals, including the famed Orientalia Festival of Ethnic Dance in Miami Beach for fourteen years.
- Teacher to Bozneka, the only American to win the Egyptian Ahlan Wa Sahlan Raks Sharki dance competition.
- She authored three books, They Told Me I Couldn’t, about living and dancing in Colombia in the 1980′s, and the instructional book Belly Dancing for Fitness. In September, 2005, Ms. Dallal moved to Seattle, Washington, and began her latest endeavor, “40 Days and 1001 Nights”, in which she lived in five Muslim countries for 40 days each (Indonesia, Egypt, Zanzibar, Jordan, and China’s western most province, the predominately Muslim Xinjiang Autonomous Region.)
- “40 Days and 1001 Nights” became a book, documentary film, music cd (by Africa’s oldest orchestra, the 103 year old Ikhwani Safaa Musical Club of Zanzibar), and dance concert, all produced by Ms. Dallal. The final edition of the book came out in February, 2008, and it is now published in the US, India and Russia.
- 10 percent of the proceeds from those projects go to the “1001 Nights Fund” to help people in the countries she visited and beyond. Tamalyn is currently producing a second cd with the Ikhwani Safaa Musical Club of Zanzibar entitled “Made in Zanzibar.”
Classes with Tamalyn
Back to the roots… Basic Technique Revived
Tamalyn Dallal has been traveling for the past 9 years, exploring how life affects dance and how dance enhances daily life. She will take us back to the basics, but these basics take years to hone. She will give details that make the movements stand on their own- without the need for modernization or westernization.
The Legacy of Badia Masabni and a Trip Through Time- Egypt’s Golden Age
This workshop is based on the music of people who set the stage for the worldwide bellydance explosion that followed many decades later. We will go back in time, dance to the original music played and sung by Mohammed Abdel Wahab, Umm Khulthum (overtures), Farid el Atrache, and Abdel Halim Hafez. Tamalyn will show how their work is part of our roots, whether we dance Tribal or Oriental, and why it is important to be familiar with them. She will show how we can use this vintage music and make it relevant in today’s world.
