10:00-11:30 Devyani : FAVORITE COMBINATIONS – Learn several of our favorite combinations including the Ghawazee ½ turn combo, Resham ka - Eyptian combo and everybody's favorite, The ASWAT fade. We're open to suggestions and requests for this class as well.
11:30-1:00 Elizabeth : TURKISH ROMAN FUSION – The more you know, the more confidently you will express your unique Voice. Expand your dance vocabulary, and explore the energizing 9/8 rhythm! Learn the dance in its true form, and then fuse it to other dance elements. Turkish Rom dance is richly expressive and playful, passionate and fun. Students will dance the pure form to traditional music in 9/8 time signature. Then we will use non-traditional music to create a scintillating, original fusion choreography, drawing on the technique and knowledge of the folkloric form. Please bring a notebook, and wear yoga pants, a simple hip sash and a comfortable top. Jas : RHYTHMS – Bring your ears, drum, and brain! We will discuss some traditional Balkan and Middle Eastern rhythms that you might not have heard very often -- how to identify them by listening; how are they structured, played and ornamented.
2:00-3:30 Mira : TAXEEM - all things ooey and gooey. – An articulate workshop designed to enhance the poise and fluidity of the taxeem, introducing dancers to movement vocabulary beyond the "Tribal Frame" as well as polishing transitions. We will address such issues as timing, musical and personal interpretation, illusions of the boneless dancer, and sensual vs sexual. Denys : MELODY WORKSHOP – Bring your audio recording equipment and your melodic instrument or you voice to the Melody Workshop.. We'll be learning to play and sing Turkish songs. Scores and lyrics will be provided. Go to ww.telerama.com/~denys2/tribalcon08/musiclist.html in February to get early sound samples and lyrics and score sheets.
3:30-5:00 Onca : Raks Vaudevillia: Fusion Cane! – Foxy or Folky, it's all how you handle the big stick. Cane, or 'Raks Assaya', is a traditional woman's dance art that offers tremendous creative expression to Fusion, Burlesque, and Vaudeville artists. Building on the tribal dance vocabulary, we drill sustainable cane technique and explore combos with attitude.. Great for developing both troupe precision and the theatrical face of fusion. Jas : SIMPLE MUSIC EDITING – Want some cool music for your dance, but track 5 isn't long enough? Don't have your own band to do that special mix just for you? Confused about what sample rate means? In this class we will discuss some basic theory of digital music and figure out how to do some simple editing tasks using your computer and freely available sound editing software. The class will focus on a few common issues and should be accessible to nearly anyone who can drive a mouse.
5:00-6:00 Jen : LECTURE – ANATOMY FOR BELLY DANCERS – An understanding of anatomy is extremely valuable for dancers and dance teachers. It can allow you to access better technique by knowing what muscles initiate and guide a movement as well as what musculoskeletal factors can limit a movement. Knowledge of the body and how it moves can also allow a dancer to move safely without injury. It can help a teacher communicate with students how to move more effectively with better body awareness and also how to encourage proper biomechanics and injury prevention. In this workshop, Jennifer Speiden will introduce some important anatomy concepts that all dancers should know to help keep you and your students dancing pain-free with grace and ease for years to come. The class will include lecture, visual aides and movement explorations to help participants fully understand the mechanisms behind the movements.
7:00 Meet and Greet, shopping will be open.
8:00 Live music concert by music teachers with live music & dance hafla to follow.

9:00-10:00 Andrea : BELLY YOGA – This is a yoga class specifically designed for bellydancers. Our focus will be on opening the hips, firing up the core, and awakening that old kundalini. Bring a yoga mat and a small towel.
10:00-11:30 Devyani : GROUP IMPROVISATION TECHNIQUES – Learn how to move together in a group formation during improvisation. We'll cover standard formations, cuing techniques and how to make smooth transitions. Learn, or brush up on, the tricks of the trade that lead to that seamless group improvisation that always WOWs the crowd. Awalim : DRUMMING 101 FOR DANCERS –

The Drumming Dancer
Teejei & Majda of Awalim

If you've never picked up a drum, or have taken the cursory "whack" at it now and then, this workshop is for you! This class is an absolute introduction to the most basic concepts of drumming for the dancer who wishes to begin her study of rhythm. We will begin with hand and body posture for the DUM, TEK, and KA sounds as played on the Doumbek and Tar/Frame Drum. We will then discuss useful musical concepts and practice several popular rhythms including the beledi family, chiftitelli, and others.

We also had to start from square one in building a live music and dance show for our Georgia Ren Faire engagement this past spring, and it taught us a lot. We'd like to share some of our secrets with you, including standing and moving with your drum, interacting with your fellow performers and the audience, and the Dueling Drums!

Please bring a doumbek and zils, and a frame drum if you have one.
11:30-1:00 Elizabeth : FLOORWORK AND STRENGTHENING: Ever wanted to move more gracefully on the floor? Enhance your vocabulary and ability to utilize levels more effectively. We will begin with stretching and strengthening exercises as well as awareness of safety for knees, and then learn a combination that can be easily integrated into any dance choreography. This class is also excellent for those wishing to balance props. Knee pads and a yoga mat are recommended. Swords, pots, or other balancing props are welcome for those wishing to combine floor work with balancing. Seido : DRUMMING – Seido will show you how to stay flexible and clean on dumbek, while covering some interesting odd-metered Balkan & Turkish Romani rhythms.
2:00-3:30 Ultra Gypsy : The Jill Drill Part I: Part one of Ultra Gypsy founder Jill Parker's trendsetting tribal fusion workshops. Open level. Denys : MELODY WORKSHOP – Bring you audio recording equipment and your melodic instrument or you voice to the Melody Workshop.. We'll be learning to play and sing Turkish songs. Scores and lyrics will be provided. Go to www.telerama.com/~denys2/tribalcon08/musiclist.html in February to get early sound samples and lyrics and score sheets.
3:30-5:00 Zoe : FAST & FURIOUS – Short combinations will be drilled throughout this class, utilizing elements of pop and lock and teaching muscular control to smooth out the moves. Hits (a more advanced style of popping found in breakdance) will be drilled and incorporated into rolls, arm movements, and head isolations. These combinations will be fully broken down so the student is able to get a real understanding of the mechanisms behind them. The combinations will be short enough so the student is able to apply them to their dance vocabulary. August : SCIENCE OF IMPROVISATIONS FOR MUSICIANS – Finally, a method for playing intuitively and spontaneously--improvisation is de-mystified! August will teach some guidelines that can improve soloing and playing off the cuff. The class cultivates supportive roles among musicians and guides group dynamics with everyone coming out smelling like roses...musically speaking.
